LONDON — A purse, a pearl necklace and a surface pattern pressed into silicone made a prizewinning group of molded dresses. They came from Hannah Williams of Epsom, England, during Graduate Fashion Week in London.
Like the outfits with splashes of color and images of giant paper clips — from Lauren Smith at Edinburgh College of Art — student imagination seemed to have taken on a new dimension.
By including the work of students from 40 British fashion and design schools, as well as 16 international institutions like Parsons in New York, Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo and Istituto Marangoni in Milan, the gala awards ceremony Thursday gave a global vision of talent. A fantastical mix of vivid colors on a surface packed with flower blooms won Angus Chiang, from Shih Chien University in Taiwan, the International Show Award for 2013.
Men’s wear was a powerful part of the event’s offering, with that award going to beautifully crafted clothes set off with differently shaped beards as accessories. They were designed by two students from Edinburgh College of Art: Shauni Douglas and Olivia Creber.
The controlled creativity of these students, whose mission is to fold textile innovation into appealing clothes, was displayed on the stands and on the runway. And in case anyone needed an extra lesson in fashion style, Victoria Beckham showed up with her son, Romeo, to encourage the students from around Britain and across the world.
